Thailand’s best shallow reefs are snorkel depth. That is not a consolation prize. It is why a calm Andaman morning with a mask can beat a rushed Discover Scuba in a surge you cannot equalise in. Diving earns its fee on walls, pinnacles, and visibility that a snorkel cannot use. The wrong choice is not “less adventure”. It is a longtail, a headache, and a reef you stood on.
Start with whether you can swim
If you cannot swim comfortably in open water — not a hotel pool, open water — do not “try diving” from a longtail because the boat is already paid. Discover Scuba is a supervised first look, not a workaround for panic. Open Water (PADI, SSI, or equivalent) is a course with confined water, theory, and logged dives. It takes days, not a Tuesday morning before a 14:00 transfer.
Snorkel is enough when the coral is in the top few metres, the sea is a lake, and you want time, not depth. Many east-side Similan gardens, in-season Krabi islands, and sheltered Gulf bays are this. You see the reef. You can lift your head. You can quit without a buddy-check.
Diving earns the fee when the site is a wall, a pinnacle, or a place like Richelieu Rock or Chumphon Pinnacle where the life is not staged at snorkel depth. Visibility, current, and a competent boat matter more than the logo on the T-shirt. Check instructor ratio and the actual boat, not the Facebook sunset. Site names live on Dive sites.
Ko Tao is the course factory of the Gulf. Phuket and Khao Lak are the Andaman course and liveaboard belt. None of them can put coral back after a fin. Reef manners are the same with a mask or a regulator: no standing, no touching, no “just this bit”. A rash vest beats a lot of what is sold as reef-safe sunscreen. Fins take coral off. So do knees.
A small dry bag for the dry clothes and the park wristband is the unglamorous kit that actually gets used. The GoPro mount can wait until you can clear a mask without drama.
Two seas, two seasons, one Similan gate
Visibility is a coast story and a monsoon story. It is not a personality trait of “Thailand”.
Andaman (Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, Similans, Surin) — typical dive and snorkel window November to April, when the southwest monsoon has backed off and the sea is the thing you paid for. May into October is swell, rain, and closures. Mu Ko Similan is the clean example: park closed about 16 May to 14 October 2026, open about 15 October to 15 May. Foreigner adult park fee is commonly cited around 500 THB; boats add their own bill. Daily visitor cap cited 3,850. You do not freelance this. You book a park-legal operator or you look at a different island. Fees and drones: Park permits.
Gulf (Samui, Phangan, Tao, the east-facing islands) — often the better bet in the Andaman’s wet months. Tao’s courses keep running when Phuket’s day boats are bouncing. The Gulf’s own rough patch is typically late year (October–December on many east-facing beaches), which is exactly when the Andaman is opening up. That split is the whole of Which coast.
A “good vis” day is still a local call. Rain up-current, a wind that turned overnight, a longtail parking on the coral: any of these can turn a famous name into a green soup. The shop that says “we’ll see in the morning” is more honest than the shop that guarantees turtles.
PADI, SSI, Discover — pick the product, not the sticker
Snorkel trip — mask, usually fins, a jacket if the shop is being sensible, a boat with a ladder you can use. Ask whether the stop is a real reef or a fish-feeding circus. Ask the last-return time. Park tickets are cash more often than not.
Discover Scuba / try dive — confined or very easy site, instructor in your pocket, no certification that survives the week. Fine as a taste. A bad idea if you cannot equalise, cannot swim, or the sea is a washing machine. You will still be tired. Do not stack a night bus after it.
Open Water — the actual licence. Two to four days depending on the shop and whether you e-learning the theory. Tao, Phuket, Khao Lak, and a few Krabi shops do this all season. Compare: how many students per instructor, whether your dives are in a soup beside a pier, whether the boat is a proper dive boat. The card is only as good as the hours.
Already certified — bring the card (digital is widely accepted, plastic still helps). Logbook is polite. If you have not dived in a couple of years, a refresher is cheaper than pride. Deep and current sites are not a “welcome back” present.
Liveaboards to Richelieu and the Similans are an Andaman-high-season product. They are not a first dive. They are also not running through the closed months no matter what a 2019 banner ad still says.

Reef manners that are not optional
Stand on sand or do not stand. Photograph without kneeling on the living bit. Do not chase turtles for the shot; they are faster than your ethics. Feed fish and you train a mob that bites the next child. Touch a fire hydroid once.
Longtail parking is a reef problem too. If the boatman is dropping an anchor onto coral, say something once, calmly, and if it continues you have learned the shop. Next time pick a different boat. Park tickets and last-return times still apply; manners are not a substitute for a legal operator. Park permits.
Snorkel kit from a shop is usually a mask that almost fits and fins that almost match. If you snorkel more than twice, a mask that actually seals is worth owning. Fins that are too long on a shallow garden are how coral dies. Short fins, or no fins and a careful kick, beat a theatrical splash.

Be in the first group without apology. Join the second group with a card, a season, and a park ticket that is actually valid that week.
