Thai national parks are a Department of National Parks (DNP) system with a two-tier gate: foreign visitors pay more than Thai citizens. That is policy, not a surprise surcharge invented at the booth. Carry cash in baht. Cards die at a surprising number of mountain and island gates. A marine-park day can be a park ticket plus a boat plus a last-return time that does not care about your sunset photograph.
Two-tier fees are the system
The board at the gate lists foreigner and Thai rates, usually adult and child, plus a vehicle fee if you drive in. Staff will not debate the philosophy. Have small notes. A 1,000-baht bill at an early booth is how you collect a pocket of coins you will then lose to a waterfall vendor.
Figures below are the ones we can pin for 2026. Khao Yai and Doi Inthanon come from the official park picture. Khao Sok HQ is reported in a band. Mu Ko Similan’s foreigner adult park fee is the commonly cited ~500 THB, not a number we are treating as a gazetted footnote on this page.

Khao Sok’s HQ band (200–300) is why the bar sits at the Cheow Lan adult figure. If your boat ticket already includes the lake fee, do not pay it twice because a blog said “always 300 at the road gate”. Ask. Keep the receipt on your phone.

Cash, wristbands, hours
Cash. Baht. Gates at Pak Chong, Noen Hom, Inthanon’s mountain road, and island piers are not a Bangkok mall. ATMs exist in the gateway towns — Pak Chong, Chom Thong, the Khao Sok strip — not always at the booth. Withdraw on the way in. Gateway money notes: Money and SIM.
Wristbands. Marine parks and some busy day sites issue a paper ticket or a day wristband. Wear it. Rangers on a second beach or a second island will look. Losing it and arguing that you “already paid” is how you pay again or you walk back to the pier. Overnight camping or a raft-house is a different slip; do not assume a day band covers a dawn of the next calendar day.
Hours. Parks are not 24-hour nature. Road gates close. Waterfall car parks empty. Night safaris at Khao Yai are a product with a time, not a freelance drive. If you are inside after the posted return, you are the problem the ranger already met this week.
Last boats. Island and lake days end before the photogenic dusk you booked the trip for. Cheow Lan longtails and Similan day boats run to a last-return that exists because weather, fuel, and a park curfew are real. Missing it is not a charming Robinsonade. It is a ranger radio and a bill. Build the buffer into the day, not as a negotiation at 17:10.
A dry bag for the phone, the park tickets, and the extra shirt is more use on a longtail than a second camera body. A cheap roll-top dry bag earns its keep the first time spray comes over the bow.
What the signs already said
The pictograms are not decoration.
- No drones — parks, and especially temples inside parks. People & Spirit’s Temple etiquette is the wat rule; this page is the DNP rule. Together they mean no.
- No collecting — shells, coral, orchids, “just one” seed pod. Marine parks have heard the souvenir speech.
- No feeding — macaques at Khao Yai and every car park with a bin. Fed monkeys bite. That is a medical afternoon, not a story.
- Stay on the trail — monsoon closes unofficial shortcuts. Khao Sok is not a London loop. Guides are not a tourist tax on every mountain; on a flooded cave or a ridge in rain they are the difference between a walk and a rescue.
- No loudspeakers, no litter, no soap in the waterfall. Obvious, still ignored, still enforced when a ranger is in a bad mood you caused.
Similan season is a hard close, not a “maybe wet”. Closed about 16 May to 14 October 2026; open about 15 October to 15 May. The daily cap cited 3,850 is why your day-trip operator talks about booking, not why you should try a freelance longtail at dawn. Trekking and monsoon
Do not freelance a closed trail because the map app still draws a line. June to October on the Andaman-facing parks means leeches, swollen creeks, and boats that do not run. The Gulf’s clock is different — Monsoon seasons — but a mountain does not care which sea you flew into.
Khao Yai’s popular trails still want proper shoes. Doi Inthanon’s summit at 2,565 m can want a layer in the same week Bangkok wants a shower. Khao Sok’s cave systems have a flash-flood history; access is guided and weather-gated for a reason that is not marketing.
Camping inside a park is a permit and a pitch, not a hammock off a signed tree. Raft-houses on Cheow Lan are booked through operators who already paid the lake side of the fee. Turning up with a backpack and a hope is how you sleep in the car park town.
A working sequence
- Cash in baht the day before, not at the booth.
- Know which gate (Khao Yai: Pak Chong vs Noen Hom) and which ticket (HQ vs lake vs island).
- Wristband on, receipt photographed, last-boat time written where you can see it with wet hands.
- Drone stays bagged. Soap stays out of the pool. Macaques stay un-instagrammed with bananas.
- Out through the same gate logic you came in on.
Foreigner rates will feel steep next to a Thai family’s 40 THB at Khao Yai. The park still has to run. Pay the board, keep the band, catch the boat.
